Christ Has Opened Paradise

 

'I passed on to you what was most important and what had been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and He was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.' 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NLT) 

My Lord! What a Morning! Every Easter every Christian should wake up with this exclamation and just soak up the irrefutable fact that the resurrection of Jesus Christ validates our faith, our confidence, our joy.

Google 'Resurrection' or 'Easter' and you will come across many articles trying to prove the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his death as a historical fact. But the early believers believed the resurrection needing no apologetics or proofs; they lived the fact of the resurrection, Jesus being among them and appearing before their very eyes. They were the eyewitnesses of the resurrection as St Paul wrote

'He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. After that He was seen by more than 500 of His followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles. Last of all, as though I have been born at the wrong time, I also saw Him.' 1 Corinthians 15:5-8 (NLT) 

The very drastic change in the behaviour of the apostles from fearful and despondent followers to confident, brave and committed disciples indicated that something extraordinarily miraculous occurred. Christ had informed them that despite the horrendous nature of his death by crucifixion, on the third day, He will be raised again from the grave. Indeed, they saw first hand, Jesus Christ's triumph over death and they were no longer afraid.

A drastic paradigm shift occurred. Because Jesus Christ lives, Christianity grew from a small motley band of believers in the backwater of the Judean hills to the global religion it is today with millions of Christians from every country and every part of the world.

St Paul put it bluntly,

'And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. And we apostles would all be lying about God - for we have said that God raised Christ from the dead.' 1 Corinthians 15:14-15

What does the fact of Christ's resurrection mean to us personally? We can take reference from a hymn composed by Charles Wesley in 1739, 'Christ The Lord Is Risen Today!Originally written in 11 stanzas, now condensed to 6 stanzas as in the United Methodist Hymnal, the hymn is replete with all that Easter, the Resurrection, mean to individual Christians today, the good news of the Gospel

  • All heaven and all earth now sing for joy, triumphantly at this irrefutable resurrection.
  • Christ's redeeming work is complete.
  • The fight against evil proved victorious,
  • Paradise was opened, eternal life ushered.
  • There is no more fear of death, no victory of the grave.
  • We now look forward to the day of our own resurrection to everlasting life.
At that first Easter as the three ladies, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome entered Jesus' tomb, the angel told them,

'Don't be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified. He isn't here! He is risen from the dead! Look this is where they laid His body.' Mark 16:6 (NLT)


Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say,Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high,Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply,Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done,Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won,Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!
Christ hath opened paradise,Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Dying once He now doth save, Alleluia!

On that Easter morning, the prophecies of the Old Testament (Isaiah and Hosea) were fulfilled and the era of the New Testament declared.

'Death is swallowed up in victory, O death, where is your victory, O death where is your sting?' 1 Corinthians 15:54b-55

A Matter Of Heart


'I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but why have already passed from death into life.' John 5:24 (NLT)

Every year on 24 May, Methodist Churches all over the world commemorate Aldersgate Day. On that day in 1738, John Wesley had a sublime but life-changing spiritual experience in which he described his heart as 'strangely warmed.' At a prayer meeting on Aldersgate Street and listening to a reading from Martin Luther about the new birth he described this experience as "I felt I did trust Christ, Christ alone, for salvation and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."

Many had tried to interpret what exactly happened to John Wesley that night. Some say that it was a true conversion experience. Others saw this as the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Whatever it was, it was a watershed of his life and ministry.

I believe that Wesley had a deep assurance of his salvation, once and for all, never to look back, a 'Forever Christian' assurance. 

I had a similar experience, when about a year after I became a Christian and after listening to a Overseas Missions Fellowship missionary, Mr. Martin Goldsmith speak at a Youth for Christ camp. Martin Goldsmith was speaking on Christian Discipleship and he urged the campers to go back to our rooms, make a list of our then known sins, confess everyone of them then commit our lives to Jesus Christ. It was an emotional experience for me to confess my sins. However from that time on, I knew I will be a 'Forever Christian.'

Hal Knight (ref 1) concurred and wrote, 'What Wesley experienced there was a new capacity to trust in Christ, forgiveness of sins and assurance that he was a child of God, and a new birth in which he began to grow in the knowledge and love of God and in love of neighbour. This was not simply an external obedience but a matter of the heart.' 

The assurance of being forever a Christian is the anchor of the Methodist Church and by which it withstood the test of time since 1738. Methodist Churches all over the world have gone through periods of troughs and highs, backslidings and revivals. Nevertheless the Aldersgate experience lives and characterises the Methodist Churches today (Ref 2)
  • The experience and assurance of Salvation. Methodists believe that everyone needs to be saved, that we have a Saviour in Jesus. From there we will 'grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.' 2 Peter 2:18   
  • The rigorous preaching of the Gospel. John Wesley preached tirelessly. He broke out of the religious molds of his day and went straight to the people, not in the churches but at the street corners. He preached any day in the week, not just on a Sunday and often several times a day as opportunity presented. 
  • A lifestyle of Witnessing. Communities were formed in which Christian love and sharing were witnessed. Methodists gathered in their homes for prayer and praise, witnessing to their neighbours and sharing of experience. These became the parish meetings of the early Methodist churches.
  • The Love for neighbour. The Methodist Church ushered a social consciousness and action that saw many social reforms in post-industrial Britain including the abolition pf slavery. This social consciousness remained to this day where many Methodists became involved in many charitable and humanitarian missions. 
  • A chorus of joyous Singing. Together with his brother Charles Wesley's prolific song writing, the Methodist revival was borne on a wave of songs. John and Charles gathered a congregation about them by singing and after prayer began to preach. Hymn singing brought the Methodists together into a powerful emotional unity.
'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.' Proverbs 4:23

In 1961, the Methodist Message lamenting the state of the Methodist churches in Singapore wrote, "What is needed is a new experience, the transforming power of Christ in the heart of the believer." 

Having lived through the 1960s to the present day, we can testify that the Methodist Church in Singapore did revive from the 1970s by God's help. The Holy Spirit poured out into the hearts of Methodists in our churches, the transforming power of Christ in the heart of the believer.

The Aldersgate experience echoes in the words of this song, 'Amazing Love' (And Can It Be) which has become a beloved Methodist Anthem. Written by Charles Wesley, in 1738, when both brothers felt their heart strangely warmed, Charles gave this account of his experience, "At midnight I gave myself up to Christ: assured I was safe, sleeping or waking. I had continued experience of his power to overcome all temptation; and confessed, with joy and surprise, that he was able to do exceedingly abundantly for me, above what I can ask or think."

    Amazing love! How can it be,
    That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

    I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
    My chains fell off, my heart was free,
    I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

    And clothed in righteousness divine,
    Bold I approach th’ eternal throne,
    And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
  6. The Aldersgate accounts of both brothers, now written in the beloved hymn clearly testify to the assurances of their salvation. Forever Jesus!

Don't Let The Sun Come Down On Your Anger

 
'My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.' James 1:19

Some of us think that there is such a thing as 'Righteous Anger'. We justify this by pointing out to the many times God was angry in the Old Testament or to Jesus Christ strenuously driving the merchants away from outer courtyards of the temple in Jerusalem. We even point out to Ephesians 4:26, which says 'Be angry and do not sin' to excuse us when we lose our tempers.

Can we lose our temper and not sin? Solomon in Proverbs 29:22 had already made up his mind,

'An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.'

I do not think that there is a right to be angry. Righteous anger is self-righteousness on display. However it is easier said than done. I thought as I grew older I became more mellow but at a recent committee meeting I became very angry and upset at the lack of progress of an outstanding matter. It was very regretable. Then, the Bible reminded

'In your anger do not sin: do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.' Ephesians 4:26

There is a lesson in this: Do not let your anger broil up nor let it simmer for too long. That is not a characteristic of Christians. Rather, the apostle James instructed,

'My dear brothers and sisters, take not of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.' James 1:19-20

The words from James describe a 'measured' person to whom we should all aspire. One characteristic of measuredness is being 'slow to anger' which is also describes the anger of God. God wants everyone to have a chance to turn from their wrongdoing.
 
The experiences of the people in the Old Testament with God clearly illustrate this as we read of episodes of God's anger and punishment followed by forgiveness and mercy. God's anger is a divine reaction to selfish and destructive human decisions and behaviours but it's rooted in God's love. 

Exodus 34:5-6 tells us that despite God's righteous anger, His core character trait is rooted in generous mercy, compassion and love. God's anger is followed by redeeming love as noted by this experience of Moses,

Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him (Moses)  and proclaimed His name, the Lord. And He passed in front of Moses proclaiming, "The Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness." 

Another characteristic of God's anger is that it is relatively short-lived,

'For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favour lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.' Psalm 30:5

There is a flip side to God's anger and that is God's grace, which the Psalmist described as lasting a life time. In Greek the word for grace is 'kharis' which means graciousness or undeserving gift. 

Saving by Grace - the Gift of Salvation

Charles Wesley wrote of this salvation in Christ in his famous hymn, "My chains fell off, my heart was free. I rose when forth and followed Thee." Underdeserving though we may be, in Jesus we found saving grace. God's anger did not rain down on us, instead His grace did. God's grace saves us thoroughly.

'God has shown us undeserved grace by coming to save all people. He taught us to give up our wicked ways and our worldly desires and to live decent and honest lives in this world' Titus 2:11-12 (CEV)

Light of Grace - the Gift of Freedom

Charles Wesley wrote of being set free from the oppression of sin. "Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound in sin and nature's night. Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I woke the dungeon flamed with light." The apostle John opened his gospel referring to this light, 

'In Him was life and that life was the light of man. That light shine in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.'John 1:4-5. 

The Bible described the birth of Jesus Christ as the dawning of a great light and the star in the east signifies this.

'Out of His fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.' John 1:16

We have received grace upon grace. Don't let the sun come down on our anger. Replace all anger with grace.

The Compassionate God

'Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression.... You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; You will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.' Micah 7:18-19

I was converted to Christianity from a religion of ancestral worship and of praying with joss sticks to very fierce looking gods in the Chinese temples. I remember going to Haw Par Villa and staring in fear at the figurines of souls being tortured in hell. My mum would whisper in my ears this would be the fate of naughty children. My vivid memories when visiting the Chinese temples were the large statues of fearsome Taoist mythical gods down on me. They look merciless. 

My childhood home at Kim Chuan Road was about 200 metres from a neighbour who was a temple medium. Visitors would come to ask the medium to tell their fortune or bring offerings. Then he would performed a ritual in which he would go into a trance, whipped his body and cut his tongue with a sharp sword. I was so afraid each time I heard the clanging of gongs and cymbals; more so when returning home from school I had to pass by the house-temple just a few feet away as the medium went into a trance. 

There is a annual procession of the Nine-Emperor Gods from Lorong Tai Seng near where I lived, to Kusu Island. We were brought to watch the processions which were loud and noisy. The men who carried the palanquins of the gods would go into a trance, move and shake uncontrollably as the palanquins were made to sway from side to side. Firecrackers were lighted and thrown at the feet of the pall bearers. I was always frightened.

So, accompanying our parents to worship in these temples or being made to join the processions of the gods, children became acquainted with good and evil and the reality of hell. We grew up trapped in a fatalistic view of life and its inevitable cycles of naughty deeds and punishment. The only recourse, it seems, was to appease these Gods by offerings, incense, prayer and worship.

How can we can escape the entrapment; the fierce  stares of these idols? How can we escape the gates of hell? How can we atone for our sins? 

Fortunately from this religious background of deeds, rewards and retribution, I found the God of Christianity and discovered that my sins can be forgiven. I no longer need to live in fear of hell and recrimination. I discovered the compassionate God of Christianity whose forgiveness is well extolled in Psalm 103. 

'Praise the Lord, my soul and forget not all His benefits - who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pits and crowns you with love and compassion.' Psalm 103:2-4

'The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.' Psalm 103:8

'He will not always accuse nor will he harbour His anger forever; He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.' Psalms 103:9-10

'Praise the Lord, my soul and forget not all His benefits - who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion.' Psalm 103:3-4

As a father has compassion on His children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.' Psalms 103:13

However, this forgiveness is not simply dispensed automatically as with modern day ATMs. Instead it is related to the salvation found in Jesus Christ. It starts with the realisation of sin and evil and culminates in the compassionate forgiveness of sin in Jesus Christ. The truth of John 3:16-17 turned me from living in fear to living in faith.

'For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.' John 3:16-17

This dual and intertwining dispensations of salvation and forgiveness is magnificently portrayed in the painting of The Last Judgement by Michelangelo on the altar wall of the Sistine chapel, St Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. Michelangelo depicted human characters and their passages to hell or heaven, the consequences of life. At very centre of this human drama is the compelling image of Jesus Christ, whose forgiveness rescued us from condemnation to salvation.  

This same epiphany is also exclaimed in Charles Wesley's hymn  'And Can It Be'. Kindly listen to it, beautifully sung by the 200 voices choir of Chennai India.

And so, rather than cringe under the accusing and condemning eyes of Taoist mythical gods, I seek forgiveness from a compassionate God, the same way that David did in Psalm 51:1-3

'Have mercy on me, O God, according to our Your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know that my transgressions and my sin is always before me'

All we like sheep have gone astray
Each of us turning our own separate way
We have all sinned and fallen short of Your glory
But Your glory is what we desire to see
And in Your presence is where we long to be

O Lord show us Your mercy and grace
Take us to Your holy place forgive our sin 
and heal our land we long to live
In Your presence once again

Taking our sickness, taking our pain
Jesus the sacrifice Lamb has been slain
He was despised rejected by men He took our sin
Draw us near to you, Father through Jesus Your Son
Let us worship before You cleansed by Your blood

Have you been to Jesus for this cleansing power? The cleansing of the soul from sin is not just by right or good deeds or making restitution. The cleansing is provided entirely by the grace of God.

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing!

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: "Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns." Rev 19:6

Five years ago, the Hallelujah! Chorus, presented by 300 members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir combined with over 2,000 voices worldwide brought Charles Wesley's opening sentence 'O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing' into sharp focus. 

The resounding sound of many voices singing 'Hallelujah' in Hebrew or 'Alleluia' in Greek which is 'Praise The Lord' is just wonderful to the ears!

Handel was probably thinking of the heavenly chorus of praise mentioned in Revelations. And yes! Let the praises and lyrics be repetitive, overflowing, loud and joyful. The same litany of praises can be found in the Book of Psalms. There are 150 Psalms of which 14 or nearly 10% has Praise the Lord as the first sentence; many more are found in the verses. 

'Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name.' Psalm 103:1

'Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendour and majesty.' Psalm 104:1 

'Praise the Lord, for he is good; His love endures forever.' Psalm 106:1

'Praise the Lord. I will extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly.' Psalm 111:1

'Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in His commands.' Psalm 112:1

'Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, you His servants; praise the name of the Lord' Psalm 113:1

'Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol Him, all you peoples.' Psalm 117:1

'Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord who ministers by night in the house of the Lord.' Psalm 134:1

'Praise the Lord. Praise the name of the Lord; praise Him, you servants of the Lord.' Psalm 135:1

'Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul.' Psalm 146:1

'Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise Him!' Psalm 147:1

'Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights above.' Psalm 148:1

'Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His people.' Psalm 149:1

'Praise the Lord. Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens.' Psalm 150:1

The psalms instruct us on the how, who, why and where for praising God. We should praise God from the depths of our souls with the voices of praise that are exuberant and refreshing.

Yet in these days of texting on mobile phones we have reduced this exuberance to a trite PTL. Using just the acronym PTL texted in a perfunctory manner is insincere and may even be disrespectful. In the light of the energy of the Hallelujah Chorus one should take umbrage at reducing this praise to three letters - PTL. Let us not allow it to enter the Christian vocabulary. 

By contrast the same means of modern virtual communications can afford us a different outcome. Not to be cowed by the Covid restrictions to public singing many have circumvented these restrictions by doing virtual choir presentations. Many choirs have now taken to singing praises in the virtual space with voices being recorded individually then stitched together digitally. 

Unable to sing and play together physically and in public, hundreds and thousands of singers and musicians found alternative solutions to harmonise their praises. Here is a rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus now completely in the digital space. 


These productions will enable us to shout out the words Hallelujah! and Praise The Lord! joyfully at bleak and oppressive times. The greatness of God, the sacrifice of Christ and the ministry of the Holy Spirit should leave us not only astounded but with such sincere gratitude that we will let out a spontaneous, Alleluia!

Digital communications have allowed us to demonstrate Charles Wesley's intentions and inspiration when he wrote a thousand tongues will sing.

Like the psalmists, Charles had much to praise God. On the 21 May 1738, Charles was taken ill with pneumonia. On that day a group of friends took turns taking care of him. He was deeply affected by the love and care shown him by these Christians. After recovery, he wrote in his journal counting this experience as a renewal of his faith, Charles' heartwarming experience. 

His brother John Wesley had the same experience on 24 May 1738. John went on to found the Methodist movement. Charles went on to write a 14 stanza hymn expressing his great joy O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing and he became famous as a great hymn writer.

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great redeemer's praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of His grace

Jesus! the name that charms our fears
That bids our sorrows cease
'Tis music in the sinner's ears,
'Tis life and health and peace

He breaks the power of cancelled sin
He sets the prisoner free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me

He speaks and listening to His voice
New life the dead receive
The mournful broken hearts rejoice
The humble poor believe

Hear him ye deaf; His praise ye dumb
Your loosened tongues employ
Ye blind behold your saviour comes
And leap ye lame for joy!

My gracious Master and my God
Assist me to proclaim
And spread through all the earth abroad
The honours of Thy name

Truly, when we praise God, our spirits are renewed and our lives revived! Praise the Lord!
